Canon Group Photo Lens

Back in 2020, when Canon first started taking mirrorless cameras seriously and a huge chunk of my weddings were postponed to 2021, I decided that Lucia and I should upgrade all our gear to Canon’s new RF line. Without a lot of events, we would have time to learn a new system, and slowly try out new gear. At the time they hadn’t released that many lenses, and photographers were using their existing gear with a converter adapter.

But a December wedding was with a family that didn’t believe God would let Covid ruin their wedding (it didn’t), and they were going ahead with their wedding plans.

There weren’t a lot of weddings that year, and I was one of the first photographers in the country to be shooting with their R5 camera, so I called them up and asked them to send my anything new that they had that they wanted field-tested.

They sent me a few lenses for the wedding, and I ended buying everything they lent me, but the lens I was not excited about was the zoom lens on the left – the 24-105mm f4 L.

It’s not a fast lens. It’s not an expensive lens. And it’s definitely not a cool lens.

But it was on my camera when the bride and groom wanted to be photographed with their entire families.

27 people, on 4 different planes of focus. My first time shooting with a new system, and not enough light in the church to stop down to f16, f11, or even f8!

I’m not exaggerating – this is the very first time I photographed a group with my new camera system, using a lens Canon sent me to test just the day before, in a flourescent lit church without daylight.

And this image is SHARP! Impossibly in focus. I’m pretty sure you can count the needles on the wreaths in the foreground, and the garland behind.
