Almost all of these come from cards or letters that our past wedding clients have sent us. We have a wall of them hanging up in our studio in Westbrook, ME.
Picking your wedding photographer is a big decision — these are the people who will be glued to you (in the best way) on one of the most important days of your life. Here’s what really matters:
1. You should love the way they see the world.
Every photographer has a different eye and a different rhythm. Look through full galleries and make sure their style, editing, and storytelling feel like something you’d proudly hang on your walls. Our images are bright and natural, and our lighting showcases our clients.
2. Consistency is everything.
A few great photos are easy; a full day of beautiful, reliable coverage takes experience. Make sure you’re seeing real weddings — the sun, the rain, the dance floor chaos, and the candlelit moments. We have a page on our site if you’re interested that will show you several complete weddings, from beginning to end, and not just the best pictures.
3. The ability to help you look and feel your best in your wedding pictures.
There’s a million great photographers who don’t know how to pose, light, and direct you to look amazing. The pictures they take of your wedding flowers and shoes may look incredible, but if you don’ t like the photos you’re in, you will not be happy!
At Focus Photography, we’ve spent more than a decade mastering the techniques to make all our subjects look and feel great on their wedding day, and we do a test drive with all our couples before their wedding, so you’ll have peace of mind.
4. A real, professional business behind the camera.
Think: contracts, insurance, backup gear, backup humans, and an actual plan if the unexpected happens. If you’re trusting someone with your wedding memories, you want more than a “friend with a nice camera.” This is important for all your vendors – if you’re paying more than a few hundred dollars, make sure you’re working with a real business, and not a fly-by-night operator that could vanish with your money.
5. Protection if things don’t go as planned.
Ask about guarantees and policies. You deserve to feel safe knowing you’ll be taken care of, no matter what curveballs your day might throw.
6. A personality you actually want around all day.
Your photographers will be with you from mascara to last dance. Pick people who make you feel comfortable, supported, and a little bit like, “Okay, I can breathe now.”
7. Communication that makes you feel heard.
You should feel like your questions matter, your priorities matter, you matter. If you’re not feeling that in the booking process, it won’t magically improve on the wedding day.
8. Real experience with weddings like yours.
Every wedding has its quirks — big ballroom, small backyard, cultural traditions, snow in April (hi, New England!). Choose someone who’s been there, done that, and knows how to roll with whatever happens
Often. Bad angles add another 10, lack of posing adds another 10, and flat lighting still another. Don’t let that happen to you!
